Lürssen BLUE: new 160m hybrid superyacht delivered

The new 165-metre mega yacht Lürssen Project BLUE left the Bremen shipyard following her second sea trial at the end of June and was delivered to her owner in the Mediterranean, where she will undertake her maiden cruise. The exterior and interior design is by Terence Disdale Design.

BLUE is a yacht designed with an eye to being as planet-friendly as possible: it is in fact equipped with a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system, developed by Lürssen engineers, which combines diesel propulsion technology with the most modern and efficient electric propulsion systems. There are in fact two diesel engines driving two variable pitch propellers through individual gearboxes, each equipped with PTI/PTO units that can be used for either electric propulsion (slow speeds) or for generating electrical energy to operate the vessel at higher speeds.

Project BLUE also features an electric azimuth thruster drive, which can be used separately in electric mode, or with the two propeller shafts when the PTI units are active.

However, BLUE ‘s ‘green’ footprint goes further and, with the aim of reducing the levels of nitrogen oxide emitted, the yacht has a state-of-the-art exhaust after-treatment system on board that manages, at the same time, to reduce vibrations. Project BLUE also features a wastewater treatment plan which is equipped with new membrane technology. This allows treated wastewater to be safely disposed of in “drinking water quality”.
